Dry Needling

Dry Needling
The stimulation of trigger-points on the body, using fine (acupuncture) needles, to achieve therapeutic effects. It is based on evidence of years of practise by physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncturists and remedial therapists. The existence of these points are viewed from a modern western understanding of physiology which distinguishes it from the traditional oriental theory of acupuncture. They are thought to be the result of the activity of the nervous system and resulting bio-electric field lines.

There are several ways of treating these points. By pressure such as Shiatsu, acu-pressure and deep tissue massage. Also by localised heat or electrical stimulation, vacuum suction (cupping) and with magnets. But needling proves to be the most effective in treating a range of musculo-skeletal disorders.

Electro-needling
Often the therapeutic effects of needling can be enhanced by electro-needling. Electrodes are clipped onto paired needles and a mild current of selected frequencies is passed through. This takes the current deeper into the tissues than transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

In our clinic, dry needling is often combined with massage therapy in injury and pain management with excellent results.

Advanced dry needling
Musculo-skeletal problems are not the only ones that can be treated with dry needling. There are also point combinations that can boost the immune system, correct hormonal imbalances, deal with digestive problems and treat skin diseases. It is also useful in a range of nervous disorders.
